I know a good wedding …
Over the years, I’ve discovered a progressive satisfaction scale that conveniently describes the dichotomy between a fabulous wedding and mere event. It goes like this: A wedding is really just an event if I am moved to talk about sports or politics after the wedding. On the other hand, a wedding is nice if the event’s excitement follows me home at night. My wife knows this segment of the scale because I typically annoy her with stories from the day. On the opposite end of the scale, a wedding transcends nice and enters pure fabulousness if I feel like I have physically done battle — like the day, the challenges, the crowds all forced their way into my soul.
These weddings rarely follow the “formula,” imbue the day with a palpable love, and involve families who share the excitement with everyone around them. As weddings go, they are rare and reserved for my most select bits of memory.
Through my lens, Jaya and Meghan’s wedding was defined by this rare combination of passion, color, pageantry, big white horses, dancing crowds, a fancy rickshaw, and, moreover, that palpable love sappy photographers like me live to witness. It was all there … and I was honored to be a part of the day.
