The Studio

Once upon a time, I dreaded the idea of working within the confines of a ‘white walled studio’…

This was the idea I had about ‘studio work’.  These ideas were confirmed during my studio class at the Savannah College of Art & Design.  Photography students were assigned little white cubicles divided by curtains that isolated each lighting set-up.

But what I realized was that any given space can become your own.  Within  my space, I have complete control. It’s a place for me to collect unique pieces that will become a part of my photographs.

So I’ve made it mine.  In 2010, while I was pregnant with Emmaline,  I begin reworking a space in downtown Overland Park that was previously an accounting office with the walls all painted middle grey. Now the walls are warm cream tones, copper curtains divide the room & antique pieces I’ve collected through the years decorate the space.

It’s a place where children can freely explore, a safe space to share where mother’s comfort their newborns, siblings explore ‘who has the best silly face’ & families enjoy a little quality time together all while I capture the moments.

Here are some samples from the studio:
