Once upon a time, I dreaded the idea of working within the confines of a ‘white walled studio’…
This was the idea I had about ‘studio work’. These ideas were confirmed during my studio class at the Savannah College of Art & Design. Photography students were assigned little white cubicles divided by curtains that isolated each lighting set-up.
But what I realized was that any given space can become your own. Within my space, I have complete control. It’s a place for me to collect unique pieces that will become a part of my photographs.
So I’ve made it mine. In 2010, while I was pregnant with Emmaline, I begin reworking a space in downtown Overland Park that was previously an accounting office with the walls all painted middle grey. Now the walls are warm cream tones, copper curtains divide the room & antique pieces I’ve collected through the years decorate the space.
It’s a place where children can freely explore, a safe space to share where mother’s comfort their newborns, siblings explore ‘who has the best silly face’ & families enjoy a little quality time together all while I capture the moments.
