New Life {expectations}

When I was studying photography in art school, I never imagined that I would be where I am today. I wasn’t exactly sure where I was heading but I knew I loved photographing people. I loved getting someone to feel comfortable enough in front of my lens that they let the truth emerge.. the moment when they became themselves. On the other hand, I also enjoy creating fine art portraits — the kind of portraits reminiscent of paintings from the Renaissance. Baroque lighting of this kind simply takes my breath away.

Idealistic?

Of course … But somehow managing to create a portrait where beauty finds truth seems more fulfilling than ‘simply’ posing a subject while asking them to belt out ‘CHEESE!’

These days there are more photographers than gas stations. We are so overwhelmed by images that the true portrait has become watered down. We all have digital cameras & anyone can capture a decent image if they shoot through enough frames. This has always been true. But now digital technology provides us with an instantaneous gratification. And not to mention … the all powerful Photoshop, a program that enables us to transform a mediocre image into something artistically inspiring.   Why do we even need a decent camera or talent?  We’re losing the true art of the photograph. The creativity of a single frame telling an entire story. (Btw: I will be teaching my first class for moms this February.  You CAN take better photos of your family without photoshop!)

This brings me to the beautiful couple featured in this post. They were married in 2006 and I was honored that they selected me to capture their wedding day. But that was just the beginning of their story. Today they are anxiously awaiting the birth of their first child & in all honesty… I’m as excited as they are..  almost!

Yet it wasn’t the couple that contact me to capture these memories … their mother did!  She surprised them with a Baby Collection for Christmas. With this collection, the couple receives an artistic record of their first born — the same kind of artistic images that were captured on their wedding day. And the best part for grandma? She never has to ask for photos! She will always have gorgeous artistic portraits of her granddaughter that she can proudly show off.

And me? I am happy to share a small part of their lives. Happy to know that my artistic vision is treasured by more than just my couples.
