Preparing for a session with a professional photographer can be a nerve-racking experience, especially if you have this idea of achieving the ‘perfect picture‘. You know the one where everyone is perfectly polished, smiling and looking at the camera?
That’s not MY idea of the perfect photograph. That’s the one gramma will hang on the wall and brag to her friends about. The best images happen in the moments in between and a little preparation goes a long way.
But fear not, my friend! I’m here to give you the inside scoop, the stuff other photographers might be too polite to mention. So grab a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine, no judgment), and let’s get down to business. Here’s how to prepare for your photography session.

Things You Should ABSOLUTELY be Prepared For
- The Wardrobe Panic: This is a classic. You’ll stare into your closet, filled with clothes, and somehow conclude that you have absolutely nothing to wear. This is normal. My advice? Lay out a few options a few days before. Try them on. Take selfies. Get a friend’s opinion. And most importantly, choose something that makes you feel confident and comfortable. (because trust me, discomfort shows in photos). Need suggestions, no problem- take a peek at my Style Guide.
- The Weather Gods: Mother Nature is a fickle beast. She might bless us with sunshine and rainbows, or she might decide to unleash a torrential downpour. We’ll always have a backup plan (indoor studio, covered location, umbrellas that double as props), but be prepared for anything. And hey, a little rain can actually make for some pretty dramatic photos! Think romantic, think moody, think… slightly damp.
- The Posing Predicament: Unless you’re a professional model (and if you are, why are you reading this?), posing can feel a little weird. Don’t worry, I won’t make you do anything too crazy (unless you’re into that sort of thing). I’ll guide you through it, tell you where to put your hands (seriously, the eternal question!), and help you find your best angles. Just remember to relax, breathe, and trust the process. Think of it as a slightly awkward dance.
- The Unexpected Hilarity: Photoshoots are supposed to be fun, right? And sometimes, that means things get a little silly. Maybe you’ll trip over a rogue tree root, or maybe I’ll make a terrible joke that makes you snort-laugh. Embrace the chaos! Those unexpected moments often make for the best, most authentic photos.
- The Post-Photoshoot Exhaustion: After a few hours of smiling, posing, and generally being fabulous, you’re gonna be tired. Like, really tired. Treat yourself to a massage, a nap, or a large pizza. You deserve it!
Prepare for your photography session by Letting kids be kids!
Sure, kids misbehave, they will want to show off… it’s completely normal. Let them! They are kids! And for the love of all things… do not give your child a screen! Unless you want to witness the unleashing of a tiny, tech-dependent monster who will only respond to YouTube Kids. Think we can bribe them with candy? Nope. Only Baby Shark will soothe their savage souls.
Save the screen time for after the photoshoot when you desperately need a break.”

Should I bring Props to my Photo shoot??
My style of photography is simple and sweet. Props are necessary; however personal items CAN make your session more memorable especially for milestone sessions of kiddos. So feel free to grab a few things significant to you and your family.
This can range from a favorite book, a sport you do together, a favorite blanket or stuffed animal.
Remember, this is about telling your story and capturing a moment in your life! What is important to your child today? Don’t worry about how this will be included, just bring it and leave the rest to me!
